Wednesday Witness

This is the second in a series of posts to answer the questions Amanda Socci asked me at Write Nonfiction in November.  If you are a nonfiction writer, make sure you check out the project she is working on, a November writing challenge for nonfiction writers.

What is the purpose of Wednesday Witness?

If you are new around here and haven't been very far back in the archives, Wednesday Witness will probably not sound familiar.

I started the weekly feature with the purpose of allowing other people, including those who do not regularly write in other places, to share their testimonies.  Some shared their conversions.  Others shared stories of how God acted in their lives after they were already believers.

I hoped that Wednesday Witness would add some depth to what "Thoughtful" had to offer readers.  Testimonies have a significant place in the life of the church.  Telling believers and non-believers about what God has done in our lives offers an opportunity for faith and trust to increase.  Knowing what God has done in someone else's life makes it easier to believe that God can do a similar act in your own life.

I shared my own testimony when I started Wednesday Witness, and occasionally I share what's going on in my life through other posts, but I only have so many stories to tell.  But between all of us, we have so many stories that telling a new one each week should be as easy as asking.

Unfortunately, finding people to share was actually pretty difficult after the first several weeks.  I asked people directly; I sent out blanket requests on various social media platforms.  I posted requests on Christian forums, and I listed my blog on guest posting sites.  I did get a fair amount of responses, but not enough to continue saying I had a weekly feature.  So several months ago, I changed my submissions page from a request for testimonies to a more open kind of request, seeking any guest posts that are related to the topics I usually cover.  I will always be glad to share people's testimonies, but the Wednesday Witness feature is closed unless there is an upsurge in people willing and able to share.

GOD'S MERCY ENDURES FOREVER

Foundation

I grew up knowing and loving Jesus. I read my Bible every day. I loved the word of God. I told people about Jesus. I wanted everyone to be saved. I went to church and Sunday School. I memorized lots of Bible verses in our Awana club. I taught Sunday School as a young teenager. I played violin during worship service.

Rebellion

In my mid-teens, I began to rebel. When I was 16, I had a terrible year: a boy broke my heart, my parents got divorced, I rolled my car, and we had a house fire. I was beginning to rebel against the truth of the gospel, and I fell away.

For the next eight years, I experimented with and read a lot about other religions, reincarnation, new age, self-hypnosis, witchcraft. I was still reading my Bible, but I wasn't living it. I thought maybe Jesus was not the only way to God. I prided myself on having an open mind. I still considered myself a Christian, but I mixed it with all these other things.

Chastening

During those eight years, I had ungodly relationships, one right after another, always hoping I had found "the one," my soul mate. Spiritual and sexual impurity defiled me. Darkness and depression overwhelmed me. I started having night terrors. And then my hand...

I started teaching violin for a living in 1991 when I was 21 years old. My teaching studio grew incredibly fast, and within a couple of months, I was giving private violin lessons to between 40 and 50 students--that's between 40 and 50 lessons per week--God's undeserved blessing. After a year or so, I began to experience a horrible combination of pain and numbness in my left hand. It continued to worsen until the pain was terrible. It hurt when I was teaching violin, when I was playing violin, and the rest of the time, too. I am left-handed, so almost everything I did made my hand hurt, from washing dishes to shoveling snow. To lift a pot of coffee was an invitation to torture. I journaled a lot, and of course, that hurt, too. But to play violin, that was the worst. Excruciating pain, and yet I needed to be able to demonstrate all kinds of things to my students. So I demonstrated: I played through the pain.

I tried wearing special gloves--my hand still hurt. I tried a brace--my hand still hurt. I tried adjusting my playing technique--my hand still hurt. I tried Tai Chi--my hand still hurt.

A doctor tested me and said I had carpal tunnel syndrome, a pretty advanced case. The muscles in my hand were severely atrophied. Not a nice thing to hear when you are a young violin teacher counting on a teaching income to pay rent and buy food.

I asked the doctor, "So what do I do? How can I make it get better?"

The doctor responded, "If you keep playing violin, it will probably continue to get worse. If you stop playing, it probably won't get worse, but it probably won't get better by itself, either. The only way we know to get rid of it is surgery, and with that comes risk of coming out of it with less or no use of your hand--the risk is slim, but it is a possibility."

That was terrible news! I couldn't take the risk of having surgery. I couldn't afford to take time off of teaching, either, because I was already living from week to week with nothing saved. I had to pay rent.

So I kept teaching. I kept playing. And it got worse, until finally...

God got my attention

In December of 1994, while I was painfully playing my violin one day--that awful combination of pain and numbness--my hand just stopped working. I could not play my violin at all.

I felt panicked. I called my mom.

"Mom, what do I do?"

She said in her sweet mother's voice, "Well, I think you already know what I am going to say."

"What are you going to say?" I was already feeling a sense of dread.

"How about if I gather together a few people who can come over and pray for your hand to be healed?"

"Oh, Mom, that won't do anything."

"Well," that sweet motherly voice said again, "what will it hurt?"

She was right. What could it hurt?

So I said, feeling embarrassed already, "Okay. When?"

"How about tomorrow?"

We set up a time, and I hung up, feeling strange. What was I doing? There were people who were going to come into my house the next day to pray for my hand in the name of Jesus. Scary.

Repentance

That evening, I took a good, hard look at my life. I remembered from childhood the gospel of Jesus Christ. I remembered from church services about praying for one another. God had kept bringing Bible verses I had memorized as a child to my mind during all those rebellious years, even though I pushed the verses aside.

I was currently living in sin, my boyfriend was living in my house with me. I also had Tarot cards--witchcraft--and my left hand was my "flipping" hand. I knew that the people who would come over the next day believed in the Lord Jesus Christ and that Jesus is the only way to God. They were coming to pray over me in the name of Jesus. I knew the Tarot cards did not mix with Jesus. I couldn't have the Tarot cards in my house. I repented for using them and burned them in the fireplace. They were gone. Out of my life. I suppose I cried. I prayed. I asked God to forgive me.

I recommitted my life to Christ that night.

Prayer and Healing

The next day, Mom and four other people came over to my house, and together we read James 5:13-16.

Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms. Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: and the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him. Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

We followed that scripture.

We confessed our faults one to another. I had quite a list. I was asked if I believed God could heal my hand. I said, "Yes, I believe God can heal my hand if He wants to, because God can do anything, but I don't know if He wants to."

A woman read to me from Matthew 8:2-3.

And behold, a leper came and worshiped Him, saying, "Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean." Then Jesus put out His hand and touched him, saying, "I am willing; be cleansed." Immediately his leprosy was cleansed. (NKJV)

The woman said, "God wants to heal you."

I believed.

There was one more stumbling block that had to be removed, something I hadn't expected to be there. I put it out on the table:

"Now that I know God wants to heal me, I realize there is a part of me that doesn't want to be healed. There is a sick, twisted part of me that wants to have this as an excuse to not do some things that hurt my hand. There is a part of me that wants to be able to feel sorry for myself and have other people feel sorry for me."

After some tear-filled moments, I prayed and asked God to forgive me for not wanting to be healed. I asked Him to wash it away from me.

The stumbling block was removed. I wanted to be healed, with all my heart.

We stood and those precious believers prayed over me, anointing me with oil in the name of the Lord Jesus, according to what we had read in James 5.

God healed me in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. I was healed completely, immediately, that very day.  The pain and numbness were gone.

Healed and walking with the LORD!

And there is no pain to this day. I had the privilege of teaching violin for 20 years and retired in 2011. Now I am a wife, homemaker, and writer. I still play violin, praising the LORD with song. What a joy!

I love the Lord my God. I know that Jesus is the only way, the truth, and the life, and no man comes to the Father but by Him. I have been walking in faith ever since that day when I was healed.

Praise God for His faithfulness! Praise God for his mercy and compassion. He healed me and He saved me.

God heals--today! And God saves forever.

God bless you!

How the Power of Jesus Helped Saved a Life

I never felt the power of Jesus in my life until I was a teenager.

Like most teens, I was more worried about friends, fashion and finding a way to get out of homework than in listening to Jesus’ personal message to me, even on the day we celebrate our Savior’s birth.

But on Christmas Eve two decades ago, I witnessed Jesus respond to a prayer.

The Christmas Eve Service

For the first time ever, my family was hosting our extended family for Christmas. My mom considered skipping the late Christmas Eve service that year in favor of an earlier one because we had so many preparations to get done. But in the end, she didn’t want to break tradition and we headed to the usual 11 p.m. service.

When we arrived, we saw Bob. His wife, Donna, was battling cancer for the second time in three years. His daughter, Karen, with whom I had engaged in many Sunday school Bible discussions, was standing nearby. Bob was conferring with the reverend, but suddenly he left the church. His daughter went into the service alone.

‘Let Us Pray for Our Sister’

When we got to the prayers of the people, it became clear why Bob had been there.

The reverend asked that we pray for Donna, who had been rushed to the hospital that morning. “Let us pray for our sister,” he said, and the room fell silent, as we appealed to Jesus to help her. As soon as the service was over, my mom went to talk to the reverend and my sister and I approached Karen.
We talked about what we wanted for Christmas for a few minutes.

She Needs a Miracle

When my mom returned to us, I saw she was fighting back tears. Suddenly I knew that things were really bad. She whispered to me, “Donna’s organs are shutting down. She is going to die.”

I struggled not to cry in front of my friend. Donna needed a miracle to survive. My mom grabbed my hand and my sister’s, and we all said a silent prayer. Then Karen came home with us to spend the night while her dad stayed at the hospital.

The next morning my first thought wasn’t of what was under the tree. It was of Donna.

She is Going to Live!

My mom had just hung up the phone when we came out to the tree. She smiled and said, “Karen, your mom is getting better!”

Her organ function returned. The hospital called it a miracle. I knew why it happened: Jesus had answered our prayers.

I have no doubt it is through the power of Jesus that she is still alive today.

Running a guesthouse has been an interesting experience.

But when you add the Supernatural element it becomes an amazing lifestyle, with unexpected twists along the way, and delightful surprises.

The added Supernatural element is a living relationship with a Wonderful God who is my Father. My heart’s deepest desire is to know that God really loves me; that He knows my name, where I live and what I do. And He does show me in so many ways.

My only regret is that I haven’t kept documented evidence of the amazing coincidences that have happened over the past 20 years. I have to grab these incidents and put them on paper before they disappear . . . lest I forget. . . .

Hence this blog post.

The most recent incident was last week.

A couple booked in and happened to be our only guests for that night, so we invited them to enjoy the T.V. lounge, which they did, bringing their whiskey and water with them.

We were busy cooking our supper so got chatting about this and that -- something we don’t always get to do with guests that come through our guesthouse. Somehow the topic of conversation turned to Dar Es Salaam, where their daughter and family live, and . . . yes . . . where our son and daughter-in-law and family live.

The conversation became very animated and interesting to all parties, and we had a great time together discussing Dar.

Next morning at breakfast, Viv Cook, our newly acquainted friend, asked if we would like them to take up anything to Dar with them, as they would be going up at the end of July.

It just so happens that both my grand-daughters, turning 8 and 6, would be having birthdays in August, and I really did not know how to get gifts up to them. I could not believe my good fortune!

I rushed out to town and had great fun buying gifts for the two youngest darlings in my life and was able to give the package to Viv when they left the next day.

The joy it gave me was unspeakable – on two levels:  the practical level of being able to bless our precious grandchildren on their birthdays, but on a deeper level – the marvel of the coincidence, of the timing of the Cooks’ visit, that we should have the time and space to get to know them and strike up a friendship, and their generous offer to take up a parcel to Dar . . . not something most people would think of.

God works in mysterious ways, but just the assurance that He knows every detail of my life and cares to bless in unexpected ways warms my heart and brings tears to my eyes.

“We have come to know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love. . . .” 1 John 4:16 (NASB)

. . . a narrow gate

“Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I say to you, will seek to enter and will not be able.” Luke 13:24

I called to Jesus and He answered. He, in-turn, beckoned me and I answered after many years of deafness. I became a listener, a believer, in Jesus. Eleven years ago when I was in seeking a power higher than myself I found Him. His eyes were fixed upon me as my life wove down a winding path led by my self-will. God is a God of patience and I thank Him for that. He knew I would bypass, even abhor, the narrow gate leading to Him many times before a softened heart and a changed reason would lead me through.

There was a time I loathed the ‘born-again’paradigm. I never knew the Scriptural reference. “Christianity was a self-righteous, intolerant, illogical, fantasy”. I thought. However, I needed something larger than myself and I sought a beautiful and personal, wisdom-filled power. This was a time God smiled because the seeker has a better chance of catching sight upon God’s gaze than the one who walks opposite to all things outside of himself. I was a drinker of alcohol. I was always trying to fill an empty void in my heart and the world was very good at dishing up a new elixir. In time alcohol knocked me down. There I found myself on my knees looking up. “God, just help me believe”, were my prayers in recovery. I had no interest in Jesus-It was too soon for He and I to meet.

In my seeking, I tried to intersect my life with Eastern philosophy, the personal aspect was absent. I was drawn to but never could get drawn in. I wrestled for a solution and the solution was fleeting. Why was Buddhism so appealing but so intangible? For me this religion fell flat and empty. I moved on seeking a personal and tangible, appealing god. I soon believed we were all in backyards looking up to the heavens, focusing on a single god. When we looked horizontally, we could only see the fence in our yard. My theory was that even though we had differences in who our god was, we were really looking at the same one. The absolute nature of Jesus was therefore absent. It was all relative. I liked this theory but it would die and fade in God’s time.

In my marriage, and therefore my more mature, post-alcoholic life, the Lord had a plan for me. My wife and I were not Christian; however, we made attempts at spirituality courting Catholicism and some Buddhism. Then God intervened for all eternity. She came home one Sunday night after a weekend visit with a ‘born-again’ friend. She announced that she had given her life to Christ. The pronouncement was infuriating to me. Jesus had entered my life through my wife and I felt thrust against a wall. I was like a huge object being forced through a narrow opening. I would not give. But in this case, the opening would not give either.
She suggested we start spending our Sunday mornings at a local church - an idea I agreed to try because although I carried abhorrence for Jesus, I still sought the wisdom and personality of a god. We attended a church that thoroughly taught the Bible and the day we first attended, the Pastor’s sermon began: “In the beginning…” It was the Book of Genesis but it was really more of a revelation. I wondered if this was coincidence. A new beginning. I patiently listened through eight months of Old Testament verse-by-verse teaching. I particularly was interested when Jacob wrestled with God and God disjointed a stubborn man at his hip. I related this story to my agonizing relationship with alcohol and I knew I was too a stubborn man.

One day on an off-ramp on my way home from work, while listening to a sermon tape of one the Apostle’s gospel, I succumbed. Jesus spoke to me and said that the greatest of all commandments was love. Love for God and Love for man. Love was a prerogative I could embrace. Jesus was Love, I reconciled, and a person I now could embrace. I believed He was God and Man and my personal Savior. God surfaced in my consciousness. I had found wisdom and personality in God.

Since, I have seen how God works in my life each day. Not always in big ways, but subtly always imparting His wisdom and love to me daily. I learned the Bible and I seek to see the image of God as I look into the mirror.

I see now just how narrow the gate is. I am so blessed that I persevered in my walk through despondency to reach and pass through the gate to God. I am so blessed God was patient with me. Jesus was walking with me the whole time and I am blessed by His love. I pray for the many who will not look.

Half of Who I Am
So this the climax of my testimony. A small recap of my last two blogs: had lupus, God heals me; I rebelled from God's goodness to only live a life of sin and hell. Ok so let me finish this up. Remember some of you might relate to this part as well... :)

In December the church camp retreat 2010, I end up going because someone paid for me to go; although I refused I still went. I remember being in a campfire as the pastor asked us, "What do you want to get from this experience?" As they went around, it was my turn.... I automatically froze and spoke out: "I know I haven't been around much but I know it's time for a change, and I know only God can do that. I want to be back as I was before but even greater," and as I broke down and teared up, I just remembered how good God has been to me, and I was so blind to see it. Being headed from lupus, blessing me with a job I needed, & blessing me with life to live. I’ll tell you I needed this experience with God. It truly helped me open up my eyes to the things the devil had me caught up in. Because I understood that everything about my life was wrong & it was going to lead me to one place: HELL.

As January kicked in, I was still in the lustful relationship, making it clear that I wasn't gonna smoke weed anymore nor have sex. But it’s easier said then done. I say the hardest thing for me during that transition was LETTING GO of that relationship. I felt like he was the guy for me because he was the only one that was there for me when my parents and family wasn't. Then I remembered:  "Even if my father and mother abandon me, the LORD will hold me close." Psalm 27:10

So no matter who remained by me or not GOD was still there for me. Even after that scripture hit me I began slowly to let go of the things that didn't gratify God. It took about 5/6 months for me to LET IT GO and live for God.

It certainly wasn't easy. Because during those months I was still cussin, and slipped sexually occasionally. Even times where I thought that one relationship woulda gotten me knocked up. But God held me together, as soon as my breakthrough came, I was able to recover from that heartache and pain.

Some say the desire I had sexually kind of resulted from my father not being in my household, due to a divorce that's been on for 21 years. I might have been, but then again I've been ok because he was & still is always there for me when I need Him. So I craved male attention because I felt like I wasn't getting enough, & because the fact that God loves me seemed so unreal I couldn’t believe it. Nevertheless now it's much different.

This year I'm living in Christ MUCH better than I did last last year because I learned how to LET GO and LET GOD take control. Celibate, sober and clean for about 2 years strong. & I stand today learning from mistakes and learning how important the Gospel is. If it wasn't for my praying mother and my desire to get back in His steps I don't know where I would be. Because she didn't lose faith, God remained faithful.

It takes a lot of courage to admit you are living in the wrongs, but it takes a lot of strength to desire a drastic change. Although people STILL hold my past against me, I look at it as a reminder of God's goodness & mercy over my life. And I know that if He changed my life for the better, He can certainly change yours. All you need is faith and a ongoing fire for Him, and you'll find what you've been searching for. The minute you pick up your cross and follow God EVERYTHING falls into place.

As far as my testimony I see this just as the beginning, because although I've been delivered from my sinful ways, I still go through mini trials. I am not vulnerable to the enemies sinful tactics anymore because I’ve already been through it and I know how to escape them. The solution to overcome satan’s lies is fasting, praying and reading The Bible; DAILY. Don't be ashamed to live a pure life that honors God.

If you live your life abiding in Christ your reward is Heaven, if live your life your way your reward is Hell. Good deeds and being a good person doesn't cut it. If you don't live for God you ain't truly living.

So yeah I’ve been through it all. I'm here to encourage and be a light in the midst of darkness. Everything I've accomplished is because God gives me the strength to. God loves every one of us, although most of us may NEVER enter heavens gates. You still have a chance to live right for God NOW, today. Forget what others say -- If you desire a change you'll go after it.

"Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be."
-Luke 12:34

Remember: Every saint has a past, and every sinner has a future.
God Bless :)

Half of Who I Am

If you read part 1 of my testimony, that was just an intro of God's goodness. Not for nothing; God shows off in this next half. So recap I had Lupus at 11yrs old; God came through and healed me. Now this part of my testimony is where most of you will relate to.

After God healing me at 12 years of age, I continued my walk with God. Although I was baptized at 11, I was still a child & my thoughts/knowledge of God wasn't fully there; however, I never missed a day in God's house. And as years passed by I had dilemmas with my mom. We would always argue about the little things only because she never gave me freedom. I felt separated from the world, and I just didn't understand why my mom kept me in a box.

Seeing how everyone my age (17) was able to chill, party and "have fun" freely, it truly bothered me because all my life I grew up in a holy circle. My junior year in High school was the biggest transition in my life because I WANTED TO EXPERIMENT.

::Keep in mind; when I said everyone has a past!!!::

So I'm 17 and at this point I could not stand my mother’s rules and regulations over me anymore. So I started to rebel on the low. In March 09 I wanted to see what was so cool about weed; so I tried it, twice. I thought it was pretty "cool". But that’s exactly what the devil wanted me to think.

One thing I am grateful for is that God was able to help me remain pure throughout my 4 years in high school; because school was my priority, not guys. Besides I was never really "appealing" until after senior year.

Anyways, the juicy part starts NOW:

At the end of my Senior year/summer, I began to pull away from my mom’s rules & away from God's house. I would chill late nights and didn't think much of it. I would "sleep over" at my friends house, just to go party. Soon after I start to smoke weed, but even more then I thought I would. I was always the type to just chill with my homies, my niggas, the guys because females were too dramatic and irrelevant to me. So with that being said, I always had free spark ups, and I was down with it. I was never the type to drink so I would always smoke instead.

It’s crazy because little did I know the love of God was fading away. And it was because of MY decisions. 18 going on 19 I was through with being pure so I slipped up and had my first sexual encounter, wasn't my last. So don't sleep on me ya Hurd?

At this point going to Church and seeking God was pointless to me. But as far as my house hold, my moms couldn't put up with my nonsense. I never told her I smoked or came in the house high, but she surely knew, and she knew how to mess up my high as well lol. She would literally lock me out. It got to the point that I got kicked out of the house. I had to move in with my dad, and it just made me even more upset. So I started smoking even heavier then I did. Even though i hated ciggs, for about 2-3weeks i did it, but I stopped because i knew it wasn't me, but I still keep puffing on that Mary Jane.

During my time living at my dads house, I coincidently met this girl that lived in that town. And this was when I started to experiment with a few girls. I never considered myself gay because I didn’t do anything major, but I was def bi-curious.

After living with my dad, I had to move out and then started living with my aunt. That was another transition in my life, I went out more, smoked more and I started to hustle weed for a little bit, then I stopped because I living life in a free fall, and I had to go back to my mom’s so knew it had to come to an end.

On my 19 birthday my aunt said I had to leave back to my moms house, and at this point I was losing it because I lost my job, I was caught up in a lustful relationship and didn't know who to turn to....

So I know this testimony is long but I'm almost done i promise you lol. Any-who I'm back at my moms house, had no job, and I remember her being on vacation for a month in June and I prayed to God, "I need a job ASAP so work your magic."

As soon as she came back, God legit blessed me with my current job. Yet I was still blind to acknowledge him. Soon after I would visit church here and there, but I was still stuck in my sins; drinks here and there, smoking, lusting, cussin, etc.

I remember in December 2010 my church had a annual camp outing in PA. As much I didn't want to go, someone paid for my ticket to go. And there is when I reencountered God's love.

Ok maybe my testimony doesn't end there but lets go through it. I'm a sinner by birth, and currently living by an undeserved death (Jesus). I rebelled, turned away from God, had premarital sex, smoked and sold weed. I drank very little, clubbed, partied, had encounters with females, cussed like a sailor and had issues within my household. I "lived it up" (so i thought). So tell me something I don't know about. I knew God was real, but I didn't know about His promises for me. The only way to learn about the promises He has for you is by reading the Book of life. (Bible).

Ok God still remains good BUT the LAST PART to my testimony is soon to come. Lol yes a part 3.
Remember God is able!

Half of Who I Am

As you know EVERY Christian has a story, everyone has a past; here's mine.

I grew up in the Gospel; however, I wasn't always a saint as I am today. But before I get into that, let me take you way back when I was 11 years old. At that age, I was diagnosed with Lupus.

Lupus is a very, very pointless autoimmune sickness in which the body's immune system becomes hyperactive and attacks normal, healthy tissue. This results in symptoms such as inflammation, swelling, and damage to joints, skin, kidneys, blood, the heart, and lungs.

Having Lupus at age 11 wasn't fun at all. The sun would mark my body up in a strange way; no sun, no fun. In the winter my joints would swell up so I had to be bundled up to the max, my hair would fall out a little and I would randomly get bipolar. Although all this sounds random, me being diagnosed with Lupus was a test of faith for my mother. God was preparing her for something big, she didn't know exactly what it was, but let me tell you, this was it. Because of Lupus--I had to go thru a kidney biopsy, 3 days in the hospital +  no food just liquids = nasty .

Lupus is very scary to have; it's a disease that women mostly get, and depending on the level it can lead to death.  Blessedly I was in stage one & I'm thankful my moms never showed any anger or sadness during this, all she did was PRAY. She went all out, too! She had people around the world literally praying for me. Until God made a way for me.

When I turned 12 I was at a "Back to School Youth Rally" at my church. I felt the need to be prayed over, so when I went up to the altar, God spoke to me through the person that was ministering. When the service was done I ran to my moms and told her "Mom, I'm going to be ok, Jesus healed me."

From there on my moms stopped giving me the medications. We went to the doctor; by God's grace they said I was clear and had no sign of Lupus. Doctors looked at my moms crazy because every time I visited the hospital she would always tell them, "She's healed in the name of Jesus," and that day proved it all.

So if you think that GOD doesn't listen to prayers, He does. God will never put you through a situation if He didn't think you could handle it. It's a test of faith, you either remain in God or leave His side. God does the impossible! GOD is NOT like HUMANS! God can do what man cannot! Doctors may not have the solution, but my God always does!

...God is able!

Glory be to God -- AMEN!

Nichole Hall

I am a writer, a wife and a mom. I have had Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) for the past 12 years and Hashimotos (Thyroid-Auto Immune) for the past 5 years. My life has been one of valleys and mountains, but mostly valleys. The good thing about being in the valley? The soil is rich and with rich soil comes growth.

My Full Empty Sac

I finally resigned from a job after 16 years of hard work and much stress.  For many years I prayed that God provided an opportunity for me so I could leave.  I was working  12 - 14 hour days sometimes 6 days a week.  Because of this often I missed church and this placed a strain on my relationship with God.  However, I decided to be patient and obedient.  My new job opportunity came quite by surprise.  I did not apply, they contacted me.  What a blessing from God.  Within two weeks I started my new job.  Boy was I excited; life could not get any better.  But yes, it can, and it did.  I quickly found out I was pregnant, quite by accident.  Boy was I excited.  So excited that at seven weeks, I was looking for baby clothes online.  My husband and daughter were equally excited.  Our daughter went on the internet researching baby names  She came up the Jair which means he shines.

On May 15, I had my doctor's appointment for a checkup.  It was on this same date nine years ago I gave birth to my daughter.  For may reasons, I will never forget this day.  The doctor told me my sac was empty.  I asked what that meant in bewitchment and he said there is no baby in the sac.  I did not know what to think; for that matter I could not think.  The doctor said sometimes these things happen and to return in one week's time to have another ultrasound.  He stated sometimes you don't always see the baby so early.  He further told me not to get my hopes up too high because at that point I was also spotting.  I must say he was very compassionate and allowed me the time to compose myself.  I did not know how I would break this news to my husband and my daughter on her birthday.  I wanted to leave his office as quickly as I could but as fate would have it, I had to wait my turn to pay the bill.  I waited my turn and silently cried.

I tried to be strong, but on leaving the office, I just broke down.  My husband has been very supportive during this difficult time.  He was the one that broke the news to our daughter.  She is so strong and understanding.  I pray everyday that God will continue to bless her.  I had to wait a full week to hear what was going to happen next.  During this time I continued to bleed, and as the days went by, it got heavier.  My church was praying that all would be well, but I knew in my heart I was losing this child.  I think in a way I accepted that fact even before my return to the doctor.  My husband said I have given up, I did not have faith that God can turn this around and maybe wanted to use me to perform something special.  I don't know, it's not that I did not have faith, I just knew it was not to be.

One week later I returned and the doctor, and he confirmed I was having a miscarriage.  At that point I was strong until he told me he prefers for nature to take its natural course and allow everything to come out on its own.  I was confused and angry.  How does he expect me to do this?  I wanted to get this over, but he insisted this was the best way. The next ten days were difficult, but I must say I had a sense of peace I can't describe.  All around me friends and family were concerned that I was handling this too well.  They were waiting for the other shoe to drop, but it never happened.  God has been my source of strength and even though I was disappointed, I know he was in control.  He has placed people and opportunities in my life to make me stronger.  When I told my new boss what was happening, he was very supportive.  It was at that point that I found out he was a Christian as well.  He quoted me scriptures that gave me strength and encouragement to keep the faith.

This experience has brought me much closer to God.  On reflection maybe that was what God intended from the start.  Daily I still think about Jair and what he/she would have been like.  Nonetheless, he shines.  God is truly awesome.  My faith has been renewed, I am happy, have a fantastic family and belong to a good church.

Regardless of what comes my way, my sac was empty, but filled with God's grace and that is sufficient for me.

I don’t think I fully understood the phrase “peace that passes understanding” until my mother went missing.

Although I was raised in a Christian home with daily devotionals read at the dinner table every evening, I had a kind of hand-me-down faith.  I simply accepted the teachings of my childhood without much thought.  I was baptized, attended church, took my children to Sunday School, taught Bible School in the summer.  I went through all the motions, but mostly left my faith at the church door.  I don’t mean that I was a hypocrite.  I lived by the teachings because it was expected of me.  But again, it was imposed from the outside.  My religion came from my head, not my heart.

"Lord, when did we see You...?" (Matthew 25:37, NASB).

In November 2001, my wife Janet received a phone call from Sarah, an employee of Christian Services of Oklahoma. It had been 10 months since we had completed the paper work for our adoption, but we had not seen any progress in finding a child. With Sarah's call, we believed that things were changing.

In Oklahoma City, a little boy had been born. The original adoptive parents had backed away from adopting him. The birth mother was heart-broken. The adoption agency that had been handling the adoption was contacting other agencies, seeking at least 4 couples who would like to adopt baby Sage so that the birth mother would have a good group of potential parents from which to choose.

Baby Sage was a little black boy with problems. He had a very rare condition similar to Down Syndrome, but less was known about it since only a few cases had occurred in the United States. Sage had 6 fingers on each hand, 6 toes on each foot, a cleft palate, webbed fingers and toes, and maybe a few other cosmetic problems.

When Janet called me at work, both of us were excited about the possibility of adopting Sage. We said, "Yes! We want to be on the list for the birth mother to choose us!" I walked away from the phone to share the good news, and to prepare to take some time off from work to care for our new child.

A few days later, Sarah called Janet with the bad news. We had not been chosen. When Janet called me, I had a hard time finishing my job that day. I was frustrated, sad, and a little confused. I came to believe that God had chosen another family for Sage because he knew that it would be better for the boy. But why had he put us through this? Why had our hopes been raised and then dashed?

I discovered the answer a few years later. A co-worker had been paying attention to our ordeal. She had seen my excitement at finding out that we might be adopting Sage. She noticed the frustration and disappointment when we were not able to adopt him. She told me, "After seeing how you and Janet were willing to adopt a little boy like that, I will never tell anyone to have an abortion again! I never knew that there were people like you two who wanted a baby so much."

Sometimes we do not know the impact of our lives...especially when we are living in disappointing moments. In Matthew 25, Jesus judged the sheep, and they were shocked to discover that the little unnoticed things that they had done for others had been noticed and appreciated by the Lord. On judgment day, I want to be among the surprised sheep, the people who have cared about others without thinking much about the attention that it might bring to themselves.

For anyone reading this blog who may not know, Janet and I were blessed to be at the hospital in January 2003 when our son Christopher was born. We met his birth mother and were able to take him home from the hospital a day later. We had to wait, but God gave us a great gift on that day

Hi. I’m Tejas. I like Jesus. I like other stuff too. Like food and people and ice-cream and money. I make websites both professionally, and for fun. I was born with something cool called hemophilia. I enjoy reading, writing and speaking. I’ve been known to bepreachy and unable to shut up, so let this be a warning to you; you might get insanely bored.

Faith

My faith always comes first. For me, it’s all about Jesus Christ. I’m a Christian through and through. I believe the whole shebang: We’re bad, God’s good, he came as the man Jesus Christ on a rescue mission to save his lost sheep, sinful scum like me. It’s pretty scandalous, but true. Many-a-listener have expressed interest in my passion about God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit, one guy even asking me how I met him. It’s a really cool story (at least to me), and I’d be honored to share it with you. I’d be even more honored if you actually read it.

How Jesus Rescued Me

My parents met and married in Bible College. They had both been sent there by their parents in an effort to bring them closer to God and instead they found each other. Early on in their marriage they pastored a small church in Oregon, but by the time I was born that was all a distant memory and they were well on their way to divorce. I was two when they finally split up and then I lived with my mom and later, when she remarried, with her and my stepdad. They all drank a lot, partied a lot and fought a lot.

My grandparents on both sides were faithful Christians and while I only saw my dad’s parents once in a while as they were missionaries, my mom’s parents took me to church each week. I learned all the flannel board stories and sang “Jesus Loves Me” as loud as I could because I believed it. Church was a safe place for me and as chaotic as my home life was, I longed to be there.

God is a creative chap with a mischievous grin and a sense of humor.  He sends us things our way, encouraging us to use them to improve our lives.  Sometimes, things don't work out as planned.  In those situations, God is waiting in the wings, like a dependable stagehand backstage during a live show, ready to pull the curtain, change the set, fix your costume, or do whatever is needed to make you look good.

There are many times in life when circumstances cause me to question God’s care and provision. I am, in fact, in the midst of one of those times at the moment. But I can always look back at where I was and where I am now and I will remember that God does indeed care for me tenderly.
