How the Power of Jesus Helped Saved a Life

I never felt the power of Jesus in my life until I was a teenager.

Like most teens, I was more worried about friends, fashion and finding a way to get out of homework than in listening to Jesus’ personal message to me, even on the day we celebrate our Savior’s birth.

But on Christmas Eve two decades ago, I witnessed Jesus respond to a prayer.

The Christmas Eve Service

For the first time ever, my family was hosting our extended family for Christmas. My mom considered skipping the late Christmas Eve service that year in favor of an earlier one because we had so many preparations to get done. But in the end, she didn’t want to break tradition and we headed to the usual 11 p.m. service.

When we arrived, we saw Bob. His wife, Donna, was battling cancer for the second time in three years. His daughter, Karen, with whom I had engaged in many Sunday school Bible discussions, was standing nearby. Bob was conferring with the reverend, but suddenly he left the church. His daughter went into the service alone.

‘Let Us Pray for Our Sister’

When we got to the prayers of the people, it became clear why Bob had been there.

The reverend asked that we pray for Donna, who had been rushed to the hospital that morning. “Let us pray for our sister,” he said, and the room fell silent, as we appealed to Jesus to help her. As soon as the service was over, my mom went to talk to the reverend and my sister and I approached Karen.
We talked about what we wanted for Christmas for a few minutes.

She Needs a Miracle

When my mom returned to us, I saw she was fighting back tears. Suddenly I knew that things were really bad. She whispered to me, “Donna’s organs are shutting down. She is going to die.”

I struggled not to cry in front of my friend. Donna needed a miracle to survive. My mom grabbed my hand and my sister’s, and we all said a silent prayer. Then Karen came home with us to spend the night while her dad stayed at the hospital.

The next morning my first thought wasn’t of what was under the tree. It was of Donna.

She is Going to Live!

My mom had just hung up the phone when we came out to the tree. She smiled and said, “Karen, your mom is getting better!”

Her organ function returned. The hospital called it a miracle. I knew why it happened: Jesus had answered our prayers.

I have no doubt it is through the power of Jesus that she is still alive today.
