Derek Lee Bishop is a musician that you probably haven’t heard of yet, but he is definitely worth a listen, for more reasons than just his quality music. Keep reading to learn about what he does and how he is seeking to help people.
Derek describes his genre as folk. He says, “I am comfortable in the folk genre. It has a certain freedom about it that other genres don’t. I feel that I can add any type of instrument or take any risk that I want in this genre. So folk is where I hang my hat.”
Derek first realized his musical talent when he was around seven years old. He would listen to music on the radio and then pick the songs out on the piano. After discovering that innate talent, his musical abilities grew. Later, he would play his guitar in his bedroom, performing for imaginary audiences of millions. When he was about fifteen years old, he made the decision that music was not only something he wanted to do in his spare time, he wanted to make it his career.
After high school , he went to college to study music. From there, he began playing in coffee shops, restaurants, and churches. He explains that these settings helped him to become comfortable playing in front of real people.
Even though he has imagined performing in front of millions of people, these days he has taken a different route. He is currently in the middle of his Living Room Tour. He says that this is really where he feels like he should be focusing right now.
“The atmosphere really fits my type of music. I love the intimate setting and getting to spend quality time with individuals. This is possible because a normal living room can only hold a certain amount of people.”
One thing that makes Derek different from other performers is that he isn’t in it for the money. All the proceeds from his debut album, “Better Days”, are going to two different organizations that he supports.
The first organization is Project Red Light Rescue, whose purpose is to rescue and rehabilitate girls in the sex trade in Mumbai, India. He said this particular organization resounds with him.
“After hearing about the conditions there and listening to the girls’ stories, my heart was torn. I had to do something. I kept picturing my own daughter in those situations. And what makes my daughter any less important than these girls?”
The second organization is Gospel for Asia. They combat dehydration, famine, poverty, and illiteracy in Asia. They also run an orphanage called Bridge of Hope.
“Both of these organizations realize that curing these issues are also an inroad in forming relationships with the people involved. After they meet their physical needs in one way or another, they begin to try and sow hope where there is no hope, peace where there is no peace. They do this by revealing to them the knowledge of Christ and the infinite love that God has for mankind.”
