Father Abraham
Had many sons

I have no idea how many times I sang this song in Sunday School and VBS while I was growing up.  But I didn't actually know what the song meant until I was in junior high or high school.



“As for Me, behold, My covenant is with you,
And you will be the father of a multitude of nations.
No longer shall your name be called Abram,
But your name shall be Abraham;
For I have made you the father of a multitude of nations."
Genesis 17:4-6




"For this reason it is by faith, in order that it may be in accordance with grace, so that the promise will be guaranteed to all the descendants, not only to those who are of the Law, but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all."
Romans 4:16



The descendants of Abraham include not only the Jews, but Christians as well because, even though we don't have Abraham's blood, we have Abraham's faith.


I have no idea if it was my fault that I didn't get it or if it was never explained.  It just seems sad that I sang this silly little song over and over, and in all that time, never really understood what it was about.
